Write a response of your understanding of the following quote:
"My grandfather appeared to have been a man of somewhat tediously unrelieved virtue. It was only later that I pieced together a portrait that was more credible, if not more creditable". It would help to rewrite the sentence in terms that are easily understood before they attempt to respond to the quote.
Also, I you to choose a different quote from the chapter (2) and include it on the wallwisher page. You will copy the quote down, include the page # and why you thought the quote was significant.

Finally I would like you to review the chapter and create two questions that you would like to know the answer to.
You are to read chapters 3 and 4 for homework tomorrow. As you read you should be considering the following:
- Satire, what is it? And how is it used in chapter 3
- Secrets – what secrets are being kept so far (up to and including chapter 4)? What good can come from keeping these secrets? Can any bad come from keeping them?

May 9
English 10- con’t on with the novel. Students should have chapters 5/6 read for today. Please hand out the review sheet. This is a total participation technique. Read the questions to the class and then have them complete the sheet according to the directions:
HOW IT WORKS:
Students walk around the room asking peers to explain one answer (only one answer) to them.
– Students summarize their peers’ responses in their box (owner of the paper writes responses down)
Students then find another peer to answer another question and repeat the process.
Students can use any particular peer only once.
The activity should not take very long-maybe 10-15 minutes total (probably less). They are NOT handing in this sheet; it is only for review purposes and to help some get caught up with bigger concepts. Please go over the questions with the students and have them share out answers to see if everyone agrees.
Next have the students compile a list of the characters that they feel they know quite a bit about – write this list on the board. Then have them complete the point of view activity.
POV- Choose 2 characters from the book so far. You must write statements from your chosen characters p.o.v. but do not reveal who they are…we should be able to figure out whose voice is saying the statement. These are NOT quotes from the book, but things you think may have been said behind the scenes. Choose main characters – ones that we all have a pretty good understanding of (David, Sophie, Joseph, Axel, Mr. Wender, Mrs. Wender, the inspector….)
For the first character write a statement that you believe one of the characters would say about their life where they are living.
For the second character write a statement that he would say about another character in the book.
Allow perhaps 5 minutes for each student to complete the task, and then take turns reading their statements and guessing who “said” it.
Finally, assign chapters 7 & 8 for homework – use any time left in class to read.
