English 30- they are reading the Kite Runner. It’s going to be difficult to work with so few numbers today, but this is what we’d be doing if I was there so do your best and I deal with whatever happens on Thursday.
They had two questions to respond to from the reading yesterday. Have them choose the best of their two responses and hand it in for me to mark.
Next: we will be using TPTs (total participation techniques) as we read the novel – today…
A-Z sentences - each of you will draw 6 letters from the pile (you will find under my desk at the front a black tool box. Inside an envelope with letters, they can draw from this – not sure how many will be in class tomorrow, if you have to, recycle the letters). Using one letter as the starting letter of your sentence write ONE sentence that summarizes each chapter assigned yesterday (1- 6,). After you have written your sentence write an additional sentence that explains WHY. You can either create your own sentence, or you can choose a quote from the chapter.
Eg. "Jane" pulled, I, D, K from the pile -
Chapter 4: I was Sunni and he was Shi'a, and nothing was ever going to to change that." (pg 25). I chose this sentence because it shows the extreme difference between the priviliged Amir to the servant Hassan. Nothing really separates the two except this.
Chapter 5: Deadly accurate, that's what Hassan is with his sling shot, and everyone knows it! I chose this sentence because it is in the chapter we are made aware of how protective Hassan is of Amir, no matter the consequences.
Chapter 6: "...Kites were the one paper-thin slice of intersection between those spheres" (pg 49). I chose this sentence because it clearly shows how strained Amir and Baba's relationship is, but at the same time it also shows there still is hope - a slight connection between them.
Next, have them go back over the chapters and consider which quotes stand out the most to them. They can choose any 3 (from Ch 1-6) to include on the wallwisher page. An explanation as to WHY the quotes they picked were the most relevant to them must also be included.

Lastly, depending on time, I want you to read chapter 7 up to page 87 aloud to them. Stop at this page and have them respond to the following question…
Chapter 7
On page 82 Amir states: "I had one last chance to make a decision. One final opportunity to decide who I was going to be. I could step into that alley, stand up for Hassan - the way he'd stood up for me all those times in the past - and accept whatever would happen to me. Or I could run. . . In the end, I ran."
Explain what Amir means. Why did he run away? (will be marked for thought and understanding).
Have students continue to read to the end of Chapter 9 for homework.
**They are to read to the end of Chapter 9 for homework, if you don’t have time to assign the writing, then that’s okay- I can give them something else to write about tomorrow.
