This statement makes me feel a little uneasy because I feel that the mask has a mind of its own and is controlling Jack. Jack is not responsible for the things the mask does. This could do many things for the boys on the island and I do not any of them are positive. This mask could symbolize something. I think the mask could lead to many problems beyond the ones that could have emerged from the rival groups. This may not be good for the boys on the island but this will make for a much more interesting read.
I feel like Jack has officially changed. He's a savage now and isn't about to go back to being a civilized human being. He's all about the dark side of nature and in to killing things; he's a beast. I'm not sure if the boys on Jack's side really know he has changed and may get a rude awakening. By having the mask on, Jack may feel even more free then he already is, causing him to do even more cruel things because he's a different person. The boys on the island better be prepared for what Jack has in store because it probably won't be pleasant. Jack has found a way to hide his coward identity and now he can take control and be a savage. Ralph better sleep with one eye open from now on.
+1 - great job identifying that he mask is going to be used to shield Jack from his morals, and that it will allow him to freely act upon his instincts without fear of judgement or repercussions.
I am now worried and scared for the rest of the boys on the island. Jack has made the change from innocent schoolboy to killer all because he finally got the pig. When Jack is wearing the mask he feels almost invincible. He was free of all the shame he felt before for not being able to kill the pig the first time. The mask is something that Jack uses to become the person he wants all the boys to think he is without even realizing it. I think that the rest of the boys on the island will have a hard time staying alive with the new Jack. If they don’t listen to him or obey by his rules, I think there will be negative consequences even though he isn’t officially the leader. I think that Jack will try to take over Ralph’s position and that he will make life extremely hard for the boys. Nobody on the island is safe now that Jack has become this new person.
+1 here too! Great job suggesting that Jack feels invincible when wearing the mask. I also really like that you suggest he feels free of any shame (not just for not killing the first pig, but also for the brutality of they way he kills the one he does).
After this line has been said, it is a uneasy feeling. Jack is now being controlled by this mask, and anything he does is up to the mask. If he wants to be fearless, and rage kill, he will. Nothing will stop him from this point on. He will stop at nothing, and he will not be told what to do, if he wants to do something it is his decision and no one else's.
The mask gives Jack a sense of power and fearlessness. When he is wearing it his innocence is gone and he is no longer the scared schoolboy afraid to kill a pig. This made me feel a little worried and scared for the other boys. As Jack wears the mask he feels he can do anything because it hides who he really is. Jack now can be a legitimate threat to Ralph's position because he is unafraid. This might result in a change of the way things are run. Other boys could follow him and become just like him. Ultimately leading to the destruction of them all!!
The mask hide every negative things and gives jack a determination to continue on surviving. (I don't know)
The mask makes Jack feel as if he is indestructible, when he wears it his innocence goes away. Jack has killed his first pig and now is blood hungry, he has changed from an innocent boy to a savage hunter. His evil side is coming out and he is killing the pigs for enjoyment not survival. This line makes me feel worried for the boys on the island. Some will be influenced by Jacks behaviour and encouraged to act in the same heartless way but the others will be on Jacks bad side for disagreeing. This is scary because we are unaware of what Jack is capable of and how far he is willing to go with his new passion of blood and gore. Now that he killed a pig and liked it maybe he will start to kill of the boys who stand in his way. Now that Jack has become heartless the boys will have to be careful who they piss off.
+1 - I liked that you pointed out that Jack is killing for pleasure, not necessarily for survival. He likes the status it give him when he kills. [I could do without the curse at the end though].
I feel like Jack turned scary in a way. Jack no longer has his Innocence and therefore is more savage. In away it almost seems like Jack isn't afraid to kill things, and i feel like Jack might end up trying to kill one of the other boys namely Piggy. So when Jack created the mask he almost created a monster, and could possible be dangerous to the other boys.
This mask gives Jack too much fearlessness and power, and it has the potential to be very dangerous. The fact that Jack feels undefeatable gives me a bad feeling, there is a possibility that Jack or one of the other boys could be hurt because of it. The mask makes Jack a different person, he is even more mean and cruel than usual. The thrill of finally killing a pig may cause him to seek that thrill even more, and he might even try to hurt one of the boys. The mask, and Jack's new found 'power' could potentially be dangerous to the rest of the boys on the island.
I think that the mask has a mind of its on and anything the mask wants jack to do he does it he cannot stop the mask or anything. the mask has more power than jack, sort like the movie "Son Of The Mask" how he becomes evil when he puts the mask on.
There was foreshadowing with Jack throughout the chapter leading up to the official change in Jack. When he was arguing with Ralph there was a look in his face that they kept highlighting, After Jack killed the pig all of his innocence was gone. He had not just killed it he slashed its throat and chanted with the boys. Keeping in mind that he had other boys with him Jack lost his innocence and took the other boys innocence from him. I never had a good feeling about Jack but now that he has the mask I really don't have a good feeling. With a savageness about him and now with the power of the mask I don't believe he is going to do good things with it I believe he is going to do bad things and that the boys on the island are in trouble.
I messed this up and talked about the things that are passed the mask part in the fourth chapter.
I feel that jack is a completely different person now. A savage. Will do anything to anyone. I feel it might be a relief for the boys on the island, because they have a leader that will do anything. But it could also be bad for the boys, because they could have a savage leader who will kill them if they don't follow rules.
This made me feel a little nervous because Jack wasn't the best person to get along with to start with so the mask is going to make it worse because he cant control what he does
This represents a shift in power as the leaders should be able to do what they want treating the littluns like servants and play things. Same with the other hunters roger and Maurice that step on sand castles that the littluns had build. Jack also openly smacks piggy as he feels superior to him because piggy questions why they are acting so childish.
Jack has changed quite significantly since before he killed the pig. Upon killing the pig Jack changes from the ways that were civilized and became more ruthless as he now a lust for blood and is going all out when hunting. I think that if the boys can stick together then Jack can be a great help as he could provide the meat that they could eat which would be a nice change compared too Waring hair fruit.
Compared to eating just fruit
I think the mask has a mind of its own. I think jack has changed because he has became more ruthless and has kinda forgotten about civilization.
In some of the comments I get the sense that some of you think that the mask controls Jack, like it has magical powers. I don't think that is the point Golding is trying to make at all. I believe that Golding is suggesting that the mud that Jack smears on his face is something to hide behind, to cover up "Jack" and turn him into someone (or something) else. Behind this mask Jack can be a savage. He can check out from the norms from his previous society and be a savage without judgement on the island. He will insert himself as an authority with power, and the mask gives him the liberty to do that.
